Hey folks! I’m Fidel, and welcome to poptimister, my little space to discuss music and films.

Are you familiar with poptimism? It’s the belief that pop music, especially from female, queer, and non-white artists, deserves the same critical attention as rock music. Growing up, it affirmed my love for pop music and showed me that mainstream exports are valuable too.

As I grow older, I now recognize the flaws in poptimism, particularly how its overcorrection creates a hierarchy that stifles dissent and elevates only the biggest stars.

While my love for pop culture remains strong, it’s now filtered through a more cynical lens. That’s the unbiased perspective I hope to bring here: celebrating popular music and films, while questioning why they resonate with people.
